Tell us about your business…
We are Wattage Media, helping small businesses grow by finding their digital spark! We provide both website design and printing services for business owners.
Run by Jack and supported by a small team, Wattage Media started back in 2015 (albeit under a different brand name) and we are proud to still have many loyal clients with us to this day.
Website design is vast… from DIY options through to digital marketing agencies charging £1000s, so that’s why we created ‘pay monthly website plans’. Our plans include professional website design in Liverpool, your own designated personal designer (Jack!) and all routine maintenance/friendly support without any upfront cost.
Ultimately, small businesses have far too much on their plate as it is – so we take care of their website management, helping them grow without any worries.
So, whether you need a new website, redesign an existing one or looking for local printing – please give us a shout and we’d be happy to help.
Describe your typical daily routine as a virtual tenant …
As a virtual tenant, we don’t need to visit 54 St James Street too often (in a good way); especially having moved to a scanning service in recent months. As such, we can take care of running the business remotely but with the benefit of a fixed place to receive the bits of post that we get through the door.
We start by answering customer queries and then getting to work with design work… this can include everything from building a new website, editing an existing website through to designing business cards or flyers.
We also work with many businesses who need weekly custom printing (usually business cards and marketing materials) so will set-up artwork proofs before getting the printing underway for them and answering any queries.
It’s great that remote working is more common now, so much so that we have many customers and suppliers working in a similar way – something far less common when we started.
Why did you choose 54 St. James Street?
As a digital business, it was important to find somewhere local as our base but without costly expense. This then allows us to pass cost savings onto customers and stay competitive, so this was important.
When first joining 54 St James Street several years ago, Jack was actually still at university – so an alternative to a student halls address was a priority! Starting with the basic postal collection service, we recently moved to a new package which allows our post to be scanned and sent across (very handy!).
Whilst most of our meetings are held online, it is still useful knowing how quick and easy it can be to hire a meeting room for just an hour if/when needed. Meeting room bookings are straight-forward and there is plenty of choice. When you see some of our pictures on our website, you may notice some of the 54 St James Street rooms and amazing rooftop views over the Liverpool skyline – highly recommend!
As web designers, we also recommend having a local address on your website for ‘search engine optimisation’ purposes too… without an address, it can be difficult to reach local customers (especially if you don’t have a ‘Google My Business’ profile).
All things considered, being a virtual office tenant at 54 St James Street has been a great decision over the last 5+ years.
What would be your top tips for anyone looking to start a business?
- Choose a local web designer – now we might be bias, but getting a website for your new business is vital!
Make sure you consider all options… using a DIY builder might seem a good idea but usually ends up costing you a significant amount of time, cost and frustrations! On the other hand, choosing a digital marketing agency may be unnecessary cost. Consider choosing a local web designers who can offer friendly advice in the first instance.
2. Find the right admin support – because you won’t be able to do everything
Whilst you don’t want to go overboard initially, it’s still important to have trusted contacts supporting you. This might include an accountant, call answering service and a virtual office provider – all of which were valuable help when setting up Wattage Media.
3. Map out your processes – so things run smoothly and automatically
There are so many tools and automation systems out there now, which can help small businesses stay efficient. From sending automated invoice reminders through to creating tasks on a ‘to do list’ every time someone fills out a form on your website, it can really set you apart from competitors and make your life easier to consider how technology can help you automate admin processes that take up your time. Please get in touch if you’d like any advice.
