Next up in the ‘Five Minutes With…” series is Steve Flatt, our tenant and Director of The Psychological Therapies Unit. Steve and his team deliver effective treatment for a wide range of psychological conditions, working with individuals, families and organisations as mentors.
We caught up with Steve to find out how business is going and what the future holds…
Tell us about your business…
We provide a wide range of psychological services from training in solution focus practice through research to individual and group therapy. The organisation started in 2000 as a one person organisation and has steadily increased where we now have seven therapists and 10 volunteers. We work closely with the University of Liverpool Management School on research projects. such as “what an effective mental health service look like?”. The organisation also works with Caer Las a charity in South Wales researching the impact of Solution Focus Practice when working with people who are homeless or rough sleepers. We organise conferences, provide public speakers on issues related to mental health and well-being and regularly publish papers related to all matters psychological.
Describe your typical daily routine…
I’m generally in the office about 7:30 AM and the first hour and a half of my day is taken up with administrative processes. On a day in the office I will then have a clinic that runs from 9 AM until 5 PM. If I’m out of the office then I maybe at the University engaged in research projects. Or at a conference or working with some of our other stakeholders.
Why did you choose 54 St. James Street?
We had been looking for premises for some time and found nothing suitable. I called in to see someone I knew who had offices in the building and fell in love with it! I saw three rooms available on Friday afternoon and signed up for them on the Monday morning.
What would be your top tips for anyone looking to start a business?
Make sure there is a growing market. Or if it is a charitable enterprise there is someone who wants to chuck money at it!
What’s on your reading or watch list at the moment?
The medium, the conversation, and I watch Twitter closely for publication of academic papers.
